About

I am Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Image Analysis at the Image Sciences Institute of the UMC Utrecht and program coordinator of the Master Medical Imaging at Utrecht University.

I received my MSc degree from Utrecht University, where I studied Computer Science and Game & Media Technology from 2004 – 2009. In 2007, I participated in the RoboCup with a team of students. In 2009, I performed my research project at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

I received my PhD degree from the UMC Utrecht, where I worked on image processing techniques for the quantification and assessment of brain MRI from 2009 – 2013. My techniques are applied in the context of cerebrovascular disease management. I developed innovative techniques for the detection of microbleedsmicroinfarcts, small arteries and veins, perivascular spaces, and white matter hyperintensities. These techniques are currently used by numerous research institutes around the world and are the methods-of-choice of the international HARNESS initiative and the MetaVCIMap consortium.

From 2013 – 2018, I was a postdoctoral research fellow at the UMC Utrecht and in 2015 at the J. Philip Kistler Stroke Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. I continued my research line on fundamental innovations in artificial intelligence (machine learning, deep learning) for use in medical image analysis. I established the core framework for lesion-symptom mapping solutions in the UMC Utrecht, in collaboration with the VCI research group.

I was appointed as program coordinator of the Master program Medical Imaging at Utrecht University in 2017. In this role, I am also a member of the Board of Examiners of the Graduate School of Life Sciences; chair of the Education Committee of the PhD program Medical Imaging; and university lecturer at Eindhoven University of Technology.

In 2018, I was appointed Assistant Professor and established my research group on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Image Analysis. My research group focusses on the development and validation of innovative medical image analysis technology based on artificial intelligence.

I am member of the Advisory Board of the Strategic Theme Brain. I have been selected for the Research Talent Program of the UMC.
